Monsanto Company has announced that Terry Crews, executive Vice-president and Chief Financial Officer, will retire effective November 30, 2009. Carl Casale has been named as Crews’ successor. During his 25-year tenure with Monsanto, Casale has led the company’s commercial organization.
Precision Laboratories has announced two new products for cereal crops that utilize unused phosphorous in the soil. “Enrich and PhosForce gives growers advantages because they work in a variety of soil conditions,” says Terry Culp, Vice-President of Seed Enhancements and Nutrients for Precision. “Our research has shown that these products consistently increase root mass for improved nutrient uptake, averaging a 25% increase. Additionally we’ve seen an 8% or greater increase in plant tillering.”
Chemtura has received registration from the U.S. environmental protection agency for its new soybean seed-applied fungicide Rancona Summit. The new formulation is easier to work with and provides good seed coloration, exceptionally low dust off, uniform coverage and excellent flowability of treated seeds for enhanced plantability. “Rancona Summit provides control of a wide range of important seed and soil-borne diseases including phomopsis and pythium, as well as fusarium and rhizoctonia, which results in vigorous seedlings for improved stand establishment that can result in higher yields,” says Mike McFatrich, Chemtura’s North American Business Lead for Seed enhancements.
Bayer CropScience has entered into an agreement to purchase Athenix Corporation. athenix has an extensive herbicide tolerance and insect control trait development platform, particularly for corn and soybeans. “As part of our long-term strategy for innovation and growth, we intend to strengthen the position of Bayer in the seeds and traits market,” says Friedrich Berschauer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer.

Cargill has entered into an agreement with the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation to license WARF’s patented canola breeding technology. The technology involves the use of traditional breeding techniques to introgress traits from winter canola lines into spring canola lines, resulting in higher spring yields. “WARF’s patented technology provides a method for transferring many of the high-yielding components of winter canola into the growth habit of a spring line,” says Paul Pucci, WARF Licensing Associate. “The results are higher-yielding spring canola hybrids adapted to the spring canola production areas of North America.”

Syngenta has acquired Monsanto Company’s global hybrid sunflower seeds activities. the asset deal includes germplasm, development and breeding of hybrid sunflower seeds. Syngenta’s sunflower seeds business is the global market leader with sales of more than $200 million in 2008. “These activities will further strengthen our position in europe and Latin america, key regions for growing sunflowers, and expand the range of our offer to growers,” says Davor Pisk, Chief Operating Officer of Syngenta Seeds.
