potential impact on farmland biodiversity of the proposed herbicide regimes that will be used in association with GA21. The European Food Safety Agency has concluded that GA21 does not pose any risk to human and animal health.

No Plans for Further Bans by germany Germany’s Agriculture Minister Ilse Aigner says the country has no plans to further restrict imports of EU-approved genetically modified food and feed products. On April 14, 2009, it banned growing of a biotech maize. “All things that we import have been approved (at EU level) and we’re not going to look at that again,” says Aigner. “This was just about one maize variety, where we had a study suggesting it was a danger to the environment.” Germany’s ban on MON 810 maize means farmers will be unable to sow the crop for this summer’s harvest. MON 810 first gained EU approval for growing in 1998 and its license is currently under review for a renewal. The biotech maize so far is the only authorized cultivar within the 27 countries of the European Union.

eFSa Finds Pioneer Stacked Corn Safe

The European Union’s scientific panel on genetically modified organisms of the European Food Safety Authority has released its opinion on the use of Pioneer’s insect-resistant and herbicide-tolerant corn for feed and food use in the EU. EFSA concluded that following its intended use, the GM corn is as safe as its non-GM counterparts with respect to potential effects on human and animal health, as well as on the environment. The scientific assessment included molecular characterization of the DNA insert, monitoring of agronomic traits and evaluation of the transgenic protein and whole food/feeds in terms of toxicity, allergenicity and nutritional value. EFSA will submit the results of the assessment to EU member states.

eu approves Import of Biotech Rapeseed The EU Commission has approved the import of the genetically modified T45 rapeseed and its use in the food and feed chain. Member States were unable to come to an agreement forcing the EU Commission to grant approval based on a scientific risk assessment of the T45 rapeseed. The herbicide-tolerant T45 rapeseed developed by Bayer CropScience has been commercially grown over the past 10 years in Canada, the world’s leading country of rapeseed products. Almost all rapeseed products sown in Canada are herbicide-tolerant, the majority of which are genetically engineered. Rapeseed imports into the EU may now contain portions of T45 rapeseed. The EU Commission recommended approval based on a scientific risk assessment carried out by the European Food Safety Authority that found no indication of risk.
